Dried leaves and flowering tops of

Atropa belladonna Linn

→ belonging to the family Solanaceae.

 

Chemical Constituents

The prominent base found in belladonna is l- hyoscyamine.


Another component is Atropine.



     

Uses

ð Belladonna is used as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of Peptic Ulcer, digestive disorders including spastic, mucous and ulcerative colitis.

ð Due to cholinergic blocking capacity, it is used to control excess motor activity in the GIT, and spasm in the urinary tract.

ð It is anticholinergic, sedative, narcotic, mydriatic, diabetic.

ð Used as anodyne.

ð Used as parasympathetic depressant.

Rauwolfia

→ Dried roots of

Rauwolfia serpentina Benth

→ Family Apocynaceae.

Uses

ð Used as hypnotic, sedative, and antihypertensive.

ð Used to treat certain neuropsychiatric disorders.

ð Ajmaline is marketed in Japan for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

ð Used as Tranquilizer.  

ð Higher dose may cause serious mental depression.
