ECUELLE METHOD

The ecuelle method is a mechanical method of volatile oil extraction that is used primarily for citrus oils.

Principle –

In the ecuelle method, the citrus fruits are placed in a device with sharp projections on the inside. The device is then rotated, causing the projections to pierce the oil glands in the rind of the fruit. The essential oil is then released and flows down the sides of the device into a collection area.

Procedure –

Citrus fruit is washed and dried

¯

Placed in a device with sharp projections inside

¯

Device is rotated crushing the fruit oil glands

¯

Oil is released & collected

Advantages –

(i)              More efficient than other methods

(ii)            Simple method

(iii)          Less costly

(iv)           No heat used so, thermolabile volatile oil can be extracted.

Applications –

(i)              Production of Citrus Oil.

ENFLEURAGE METHOD

Enfleurage is a traditional perfume-making technique that uses odourless fats to capture the fragrant compounds exuded by plants. It is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process, but it is also one of the most delicate and effective ways to extract volatile oils.

Process –

Glass plate is covered with a thin coating of odourless fat → (Called Chassis)

¯

Cut flowers into small pieces

¯

Laid the flower pieces on the fat

¯

Keep for some times (Hours/Days)

¯

Fat becomes saturated with Volatile oil

¯

Fragrant saturated fat is known as Pomade

¯

Treatment with Alcohol

¯

Oil extracted from the fat

Applications

  • Perfumery: Enfleurage is used to extract essential oils from flowers that are too delicate to be extracted using other methods, such as steam distillation. These essential oils are then used to create high-quality perfumes.
  • Cosmetics: Enfleurage essential oils can be added to cosmetics, such as lotions, creams, and soaps, to give them a luxurious scent.
  • Aromatherapy: Enfleurage essential oils can be used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and well-being.
